The Montigo HL38VOL is built around a 304 stainless steel firebox — the same grade of steel used in commercial kitchens and marine hardware, chosen here because outdoor fireplaces have no business rusting. At 34,000 BTU/hr, it produces serious, sustained heat without requiring a vent chase, a chimney, or a structural engineer on speed dial.
The burner configuration is worth noting: a contemporary linear burner sits beneath a traditional logset, giving you the clean, low-profile flame geometry of a modern hearth with the visual warmth of stacked wood. It's a deliberate design tension, and it works. The classic square viewing area measures 32 1/8" wide by 21 5/8" tall — wide enough to anchor an outdoor seating arrangement without overwhelming a smaller patio wall.
Framing dimensions come in at 37 3/4" wide, 42 1/2" tall, and 21 3/8" deep, giving your installer a well-defined rough opening to work with. Rock, tile, or cultured stone can be installed directly over the firebox frame, and the unit is compatible with brick liners or mirrored interior panels if you want to finish the firebox cavity with something more intentional than bare metal. Optional firestones and cultured rocks are available as accessories for the burner pan.
Ignition is available in two configurations: a standing pilot for straightforward, always-ready operation, or a Honeywell Hot Surface Ignition system for push-button convenience. Note that the optional cool-to-touch stainless steel enclosure — a smart addition if children or pets share the space — is only compatible with HSI-equipped units and is field installed.
Ventless installation means this unit is rated for outdoor use only, and it carries an elevation limit of 4,500 feet. A safety screen is included standard.
