Five ceramic fiber logs ride above the burner and embers package, producing the layered, dimensional look that ceramic fiber does better than most materials: it holds fine surface detail and stays light enough to handle without a forklift.

Installation flexibility is a genuine selling point here. The Flint Hill works in both masonry and prefabricated fireplaces and requires a minimum firebox depth of just 12 inches — a threshold that opens up a wide range of existing hearth openings. It ships as a vent-free gas log heater, but it can also be installed as a vented decorative appliance if your fireplace setup calls for it. Either way, the gas inlet accepts pressures between 4.5 and 10.5 inches W.C., with a pressure setting of 3.5 inches W.C. and a 1/8-inch air shutter opening for fine combustion tuning.

Control is handled by a millivolt valve with an on/off switch and a standing pilot — the kind of system that doesn't depend on household current to keep the fire going. Lighting is handled by push-button Piezo ignition, so there's no hunting for a long lighter. The set is also remote-ready out of the box, meaning it's compatible with the full range of VFDR-series accessories: battery-operated remote controls, electric remote controls, wall switches, remote wall thermostats, and millivolt thermostats. If you eventually want to light the fire from the couch, the wiring is already waiting for you.

Included embers add the finishing layer of realism at the base of the logs. For those who want to build out the aesthetic further, the Flint Hill is compatible with the EK-1 Embers Kit, PE-20 Platinum Embers, and the ELH-1 and ELH-2 Fireplace Hoods — all sold separately. The complete set weighs 21 pounds, making handling and positioning during installation manageable for a solo installer.
