Empire Breckenridge Select Vent-Free Firebox, 36" Viewing Area

The Breckenridge Select VFS36FB0F is a 36-inch vent-free firebox built around a flush-front, circulating steel cabinet with hem-bent seams and a matte black interior finish. Its viewing area measures 36 inches wide by 31.75 inches tall — 1,143 square inches of glass real estate — which is a convincing argument against the idea that vent-free fireplaces have to look like an afterthought.

Because this is a firebox only, it accepts any certified vent-free burner and log set you choose (sold separately), giving you genuine flexibility to match your heat output and aesthetic to the room. The maximum supported output is 40,000 BTU, though actual output will depend entirely on the burner and log set installed. No venting is required, which simplifies construction considerably — and zero-clearance certification means it can be installed directly against combustible framing without an air gap.

Safety is handled by a built-in Oxygen Depletion Sensor, which monitors room air quality and shuts the burner down automatically if oxygen levels drop. It's the kind of feature you hope you never need, but you'll be glad is there.

In the box, you'll find a junction box, standard hood, hearth ledges, face assembly, and screen curtain — the foundational hardware to get the installation started. If your surround material runs thicker than one inch, the extended hood (VBP36H36BL, sold separately) is required. An optional FBB5 blower (auto, single-speed) can be added to improve heat circulation, and an SCV1 speed control is available if you want variable airflow. Other accessories include the LK3 Lighting Kit (120V), VFA2 Fresh Air Kit, and EK1 Ember Kit.

Three ceramic fiber liner panels are also available to dress the interior: VBP36T2E (Banded Brick), VBP36T2G (Stacked Limestone), and VBP36T2H (Herringbone Brick) — each sold separately and each doing a convincing job of making a steel box look like something far older and more expensive.

Overall dimensions are 40 3/8" wide by 38 7/8" tall by 23 3/8" deep, with a shipping weight of 100 lbs. This is a steel appliance built to be finished around, not shown off on its own — which is exactly the point.
